Prep-time

This next week is a big one for fall. Events include weaning, splitting calves between corrals, gathering and "pregging" heifers, and gathering and "pregging" cows. Preg-check week and branding week are two of the biggest bigs on the place, for the guys and for us ladies. As the guys get together supplies, get the vet lined up for dates, and make sure the corrals are ready, we get to plan for the things we can help with. This includes a schedule of who is helping the guys and who is watching kids each day, and the most important part, FOOD!

Now while the actual work is the whole point of the day, I am of the opinion that without a meal plan in place the work might still get done, but the ranch wouldn't have lasted the last 100+ years. I don't know about all of you, but I am just not my happy-go-lucky self when I'm deprived of a meal, and you try to take two? Forget it, I'm over in the corner, catatonic. While not everyone on the place is quite as dramatic about missing a meal as I am, I do feel like our job is an important one. In a world of hard manual labor keeping your body going is a huge part of the job. That means properly hydrating and keeping yourself fed, and thats where we come in. Yes we are a bit like superheroes when the "chuck wagon" rolls in and the guys all start to realize just how hungry they really were.

And while we would love to be able to whip up a huge meal in ten seconds flat like a super hero, it's just not quite that simple. We three have to get together and hash it out, what did we have last year, how many people, how much food, what kind of food, and who is cooking what. This year we have split pregging the heifers and the cows so that's two big meals to map out and start cooking. We do our best to split the responsibilities equitably and not pile all of one thing on one person. Yet another one of the amazing reasons a family ranch is such a wonderful thing.  Once we have it all figured out it comes to the really big question.... who draws the short straw and has to go do the shopping.

Are you a person who relishes the idea of a grocery trip or, like us, do you put it off as long as possible? We hope your week goes well and don't forget beef is on sale now! So get your orders in before it's gone.
